Re: Lukeville Alternative

This post reminds me of the folly of asking directions. We had spent the night in the South of England in a small village about 50 miles from Heathrow Airport. This was before GPS and rural England was seriously lacking is Texaco gas stations with free maps. The pubs just opened as we were about to leave so I walked in and ask one of the patrons what was the best way to get to the airport. He responded by telling us “take a left out of the car park, go about 3 miles then go right until we reached the river. After we crossed the river bare to the left past the big white church until you get to Bickford road. Go right on Bickford road and stay on it until you begin to see signs to the airport……” “No, No, No” piped up his drinking buddy. “That’s the long way. Take the left out of the car park but go all the way to Percy’s landing, cross the tracks and take your second right until….” Just then the bar tender walked up and cut them both off with authority. “Neither of you know anything. I go to the airport once a month and I can tell you the one and only way, Go right out of the car park…” Just then a fourth man began to put his two cents worth. I was now standing at the edge of a knot of 5 or six people engaged in a heated argument about routes, driving time, etc I had become non-relevant to the discussion so I slipped out the door. I still didn’t have a clue how to get to the airport so I just headed north and hoped for the best. I assumed that the argument was still going on by the time I got there.

Ron and Brenda, have a good trip south and drop in to Palapa Joe’s when you get here and let us know which way you came. You’ll recognize us, we’ll all be at the bar dishing out our opinions about something.
