Guess this topic has got my interest. Here's my latest findings, but don't shoot me if I'm wrong. Based on the question - Is the FM2 the same card as FM3? The answer is maybe. Forget the term FM2 and FM3. Nobody has those anymore. "FM3" became the "No Immigrante" visa - but that visa is now gone. "FM2" became the "immigrante" visa - also now gone. "FMT" (6-month tourist visa) is now called "Visitante". You cannot get these after you cross the border. If you held an "Inmigrante" for 4 years or more, you can convert to a "Residente Permanente", otherwise you get a "Residente Temporal". In the latter case you will be required to complete the calculated number of years of these before asking for a "Residente Permanente". If you hold a "No Immigrante" (like most of us retirees), you can convert to a "Residente Temporal". After a period of consecutive FM3's and "No Immigrante" visa's, you can apply for a "Residente Permanente". A just got my 7th consecutive visa and was told I can apply for "Residente Permanente" in 3 years. As an aside, the financial requirements for a "Residente Permanente" are stiffer but do provide more options of proof. e.g., investments, property ownership. For most of us, we are re-newing our "No Immigrante" visa, now called a "Residente Temporal". The term is from 1-4 years - your choice. The cost per year goes down with a longer term, as follows: 1 year: 3130 pesos 2 years: 4690 pesos 3 years: 5940 pesos 4 years: 7040 pesos If you are applying for your first "Residente Temporal", you must apply at a Mexican Consulate outside the country. |
