Here, in our town, we extranjeros can help... Even in small ways. In fact, this message board has provided the means to help poor Mexicans pay for needed medical help. There are people here who will walk on a broken leg because there's no money for the doctor. These numbers can be daunting -- the most recent numbers from the World Bank in 2012 put the poverty rate in Mexico at 51.3%, climbing every year. This is reflected in our town too. Start small, close to home.. If you see someone who needs help, help. But don't lose sleep over it. Most people we know living with next to nothing are pretty happy anyway, maybe happier than some we know in el Norte. |
