No, I didn't mean just a user fee to operate the ambulance sercvice. Our free medical in Canada is paid through our taxes,:doctor's visits, hospital stays,operations etc. The ambulance service in each city/town receives money from the government (our tax dollars) but there have been cutbacks in government funding (as in every country in this economy), so the few dollars that we are billed for using the service make up for the shortfall in funding, and keeps the service running properly year round--24/7. The user fee is also a way to keep people who do not have a real emergency from abusing the service, like using it for a free ride to the doctor. |
