We live in the San Juan Islands in Washington State and our economy is driven and sustained by tourism. We have a rental business that we have run for 26 years and 100% of our income comes from tourism. Many locals here also have the idea that tourism does not financially affect them. Occasionally our customers comment that a local was rude to them. To make our community more aware of the importance of our visitors, I have a rubber stamp that reads "Paid with Tourism Dollars" and stamp the back of every local bill I pay to make others aware of how vitial our visitors are to our community. There is a trickle down effect that extends to the services and goods on this island. We are grateful that we are able to make a living through tourism so we are able to come to your wonderful community to relax and enjoy in our off season. |
