Home in the north now after a few wonderful weeks in La Man and am reflecting on the many comments regarding change, essential services and more importantly, how to fund change if it does indeed occur. Without going into a long rationale re the importance of change, I think it fair to say that most folks on the planet, including those who live in La man part time, full time , as guests or temporary tourists all favor change if it is of benefit to many while at the same time, it imposes minimal if any hardship on others. While some fear change, as there is comfort in the way things are, I think change in some areas will create more comfort for more people particularly those who are the rightful and first inhabitants of the land. I am sure the parents of all the children would love to see improved educational services ( great facility , well resourced , trained staff etc ) without teachers having to stand on the street selling kids art work to buy essentials for their classrooms. Perhaps of more importance is the necessity for change regarding the available, or lack of, medical services. A young man died, as I have been told by many down there, as a result of a chain saw cut and having no trained medical staff to attend to him. This was compounded by the fact that there was no facility to provide care in La Man and no ambulance to transport him to the nearest medical center. Hopefully before anyone else incurs a serious injury in La Man some positive change will have happened regarding the available medical services. - I admit to knowing little about the political structure but do understand there is a mayor - not sure about other elected officials. I do hope that they are able to take a leadership role in this issue and source out a stream of funding that will be necessary for such essential services. I have absolutely no problem with some form of tax on my meals or on the fee I pay for the room I rent while there. Property and business owners should also be prepared to anti up by paying some amount of annual tax so that improvements can be made to such important essential services. ( this doesn't need to be a lot ) Tax could be based on the value of the property so that it wouldn't impose any hardships and yet everyone could contribute to creating meaningful change. Perhaps a scale ranging from a dollar or two a month up to a max of 20 or 30 ? Sure this post will encourage more discussion but hopefully something positive will be the end result for all citizens in La man..
