our volunteer ambulance

Last Monday evening Jane took a fall on some steps and gave herself a couple of nasty gashes on her nose and forehead that obviously needed stitching. A kind neighbor called the volunteer ambulance for us and waited with us till it arrived a short time later. Paramedic Noemi (also known as Mimi) and a driver were with the ambulance, which is basically a pickup truck. Mimi cleaned the wounds and let us sit in front in the cab. She and her young daughter rode in the back. When the Melaque 24-hr. Centro de Salud had no doctor at that hour they drove us to the Cihuatlan Centro de Salud, which had a clean and decently equipped emergency room. The medical staff there did a good job stitching her gashes. Now after several doctor visits and a CT scan at Echauri, Jane is very much better and mainly has to cope with two black eyes (hematomas actually). Mimi and the driver were just wonderful -- they waited patiently for us at Cihuatlan, and clearly would have stayed with us all night if that had been necessary. We are VERY impressed with their volunteerism -- this service certainly deserves all the support that the community can give it. Muchas gracias! Arno |
