stingray's sting

I was stung today by a stingray near the wreck of the (lusi) Tania... my own fault I did not shuffle but most likely, stepped on it...sorry Stingray!

Nevertheless I got rewarded with a very painful sting in the heel... I limped all the way home in severe pain etc...where I found out that the remedy is to get the strike zone as hot as can be tolerated (minimum 110 degrees F., 43 degrees C.)this degrades the protein that is causing all the pain! But , guess what? the sand (above the high tide line) is probably very close to that... maybe higher.

So if you are far from anywhere, a first line of defense after being stung by a stingray is to let it bleed until it stops, then squeeze the area to make it bleed a little more and possibly get some of the venom out (I am speaking here of a small cut in the foot here! not a strike to the abdomen or chest!!!!) then, get the affected area hot by getting it in contact with the sand. It will greatly relieve the pain...when you get home you can soak the affected area in hot water.

I found this information on the internet ... and it works. (an electric heating pad works well too!)

I wish I had known this BEFORE my encounter, I hope this helps someone...

Cheers!

PS. the medical information also states that you should get medical attention..but this doesn't help you if you are a couple of miles from anywhere
