I am very happy with my basic $89 plain Kindle. It works perfect in bright beach sunlight as well as with a faint nightstand light. I personally would not go for the Fire primarily because I really like getting 3 weeks out of each battery re-charge (with wi-fi turned off). As far as Amazon "deleting" all your reading material... it seems extremely farfetched when I also have it all on my PC, and it also resides in our public library at home (and thousands of sites on the www). There is absolutely zero reason to be paying Amazon for your reading material if you have a library card from any library NOB. Ebooks are very very simple to acquire from your hometown library while you are anywhere in the world retired, or vacationing. Note: I spent 3 weeks camping on a beach in Baja this January with some Amazon execs. They informed me that the basic Kindle is sold for less than the production costs, in hopes that the consumer will purchase from the "special offers" on your idle screen. And that also most users will purchase lots of books. You can also find free ebooks on the web & torrents, but that is another topic. |
