Hi Larry, 1. What is the volume of raw sewage that flows into our lagoon each year? I guess you have not been here to see it, but imagine a very strong garden hose or maybe two and let it run 24 hours a day for a few months. There is a lot of rain water mixed in but in terms of volume it is a huge amount. 2. What fact suggests that destruction of turtle eggs is nothing new? I am questioning the destruction of turtle eggs period. I don't think there is any because there are no turtle eggs there to destruct, they have all been taken as soon as they were laid. 3. What facts suggest that bird life was affected dramatically 50 years ago? As I said, IF there was bird life being affected it would have been 50 years ago. Cars have been using the beach for parking at Boca for many many years. My point was being made because the original poster was saying that the bird life was being affected dramatically NOW, which is not true. 4. How does one define a "stupid dupe", and who would be placed in that category? Stupid dup is someone who is stupid and easily duped (taken advantage of). A person could be put into that category if they were to accept the crisis, ecological disaster mentality that the original poster was trying to induce as being fact based, and not see that most of the interest in regulation is to protect the value of their personal property and has no interest in the burden it puts on people. Truth is we are all stupid dups on one level or another, hopefully we become aware of our being one when we can. 5. In terms of the environment, what should we get excited about, if not nothing? Good question. There certainly are big issues there e.g. climate change and the deforestation of the planet. My post was made to bring awareness to the fact that what seems to be an emergency crisis in Boca is nothing of the kind. 6. When looking for solutions that have "everyone in mind", do we mean only people, or do we include animals, plants, water bodies, etc.? In the context I was using that sentence it would be comparing the need to control the cars on the beach to the long and dangerous walk those who have to park along the road have to take when the beach is closed off. If, in the next year two kids end up being killed making that walk would you compare those deaths with the remote possibility that two turtles were saved? A balanced approach would be to make a place for those who want to use the beach to park, then closing it off to cars. In the context I was using that sentence it would also be to realize that the number of beaches open to camping has changed drastically in recent years. By the way one of the 3 beaches considered to be pubic is Tenacatita. In the past those kids very likely would have camped there but now that option no longer exist. So they ended up on Boca beach being unprepared and a situation developed which is far from desirable, both for those who live in the area and for the campers themselves. Obviously something needs to be done, but also as obvious is to realize this is a temporary situation, not a permanent one. A balanced approach would be to ride it out as best one can, to look for practical solutions, not throw the kids out and not to be a big jerk about it. 7. What is the weakest link that we humans take out our frustrations on, and how do we justify our need/desire to control and manipulate everything on earth? The weakest link would be whatever is present and could defend itself the least when the frustration has come to the boiling point and is being expressed. I have a couple things I can think of but will leave it up to you to consider your own possibilities. I think we mostly justify our need to control and manipulate by the thought / reality that "if I don't someone else will". e.g. If I don't take this lobster with eggs and leave it for the good of all then someone else will take it, and / or "if I don't get them they will get me" and I will be the chump, the sucker who actually believed in the common good. The way the world works now the common good is actually a myth taught in early childhood via the golden rule. Until the world works like that we should stop handicapping our children by making them think that world actually exist beyond a small group. It doesn't. If one were to still live by the golden rule at least it would be with eyes wide open knowing that they choose to live that way because they are the change they want to see. 8) How about solutions that have all things, not everyone, in mind? All the better. My post was opposing hyping things up to get people excited by using actual situations, not the made up ones. There is no need to panic about what is happening in Boca, nor to enforce rules which are not practical nor in the interest of all those involved. Basically compassion is what is needed, a balanced approach. |
