We have been watching Leticia grow up as one of the vendors on the beach here in La Manzanilla. She was born and now lives in Melaque, but she works here. She's 18 years old, and started selling "chicle", or chewing gum, when she was 8. She quit school after Grade 6. There are 5 children in her family, of which she is the second oldest. Her mother is a seamstress, and is now making the bags and purses that Leticia sells. The fabrics are hand woven pieces from Guatemala. People may remember her selling jewellery on the beach for years, but she says that the market for jewellery is not so good anymore, and now she sells bolsas. We're relieved that she's one of the few girls that hasn't had a baby at a very early age (at least so far, ojala!). She is deserving of some support, so if you see her, check out her wares!
