The idea of having to take your foreign plated car out of the country and then import it back in presents some obvious problems, not to mention the inconvenience of driving for 6 days to make the round trip. Under the existing regulations, or at least what the old one were, very few foreign-plated vehicles here actually qualify for importation. Because my car was made in Japan, it would not qualify, and therefore require me to return it to Canada. INM told me, when I asked in Manzanillo, that I would have to go to customs at the port authority and aquire a permit that would allow me to keep it here as long as my Temporary Residency remains in effect - for me, 3 years. I like the idea of not panicing and waiting to see what happens when and if the government ever does figure out what they are really going to do. |
