If you have an extra day, take a pango from Mezcala to La Isla de Mezcala. Mezcala is a little village about 15 km east of Chapala. The island is where a ragtag band of up to 400 indios, led my Padre Marcos Castellanos, held off and staged raids on the Spaniards, who even sent full-sized galleons after them on Lake Chapala. They lasted for four years before disease and lack of food made them surrender. They are the only revolutionaries who were treated with respect by the Spanish, who gave them land and money to build houses after granting them freedom for their bravery. The ruins are great and the boat ride is fun. Disfrutate.
