Thanks, Darrell, and Jacqueline, for this great intiative. Yes, I can add a few things: - the environmental and health benefits of having bicycles available for more tourists, and, later, more local people are immeasurable...picture La Manzanilla like a village in China - scores of 'bici's' whirring silently by - sounds and looks good to me! - it's also a good idea to bring a strong lock - not so easy to get one here -when I brought my bike down, I flew by Alaska Airlines, who, by the way, didn't have the Humanitarian Aid policy, so I paid $50 extra for the oversize box...and I stuffed it with other household goods - it held a lot - it weighed over 50 pounds; however, they just charge the flat $50 extra as either the oversize or the overweight - not for both...so as long as the package remains manageable for you and your driver, it can be overweight, too, for only the one $50 charge. That is still such a good deal compared to shipping a bike and other goods by UPS, where you have to pay a lot more, deal with more stringent customs, etc. - one more thing: Don't forget a wheelchair can fly free, and is also a good thing to donate. They are sometimes available at Value Village, etc. |
