Last Friday a couple came into my office with some photographs of La Manzanilla in 1983. I went with them to compu plus and scanned as many as I could, they only had a few minutes before they were leaving town. I said I would post them on the message board then he could comment on them. I think his name was Pablo. I divided them into two separate post for those with slow internet connections and put numbers so it is easier to talk about them. I will edit each photo with information supplied by others. Here is a quote from Pablo "First came to the village to meet up with (Canadian) Dave Godin, who I knew from the University of Guelph (Ontario) in the seventies. He, Alaska Joe and Steven Rutherford were the only gringo land-owners at the time". 1) Cazador Hotel 2) Trini and Oscar 3) In front of the La Manzanilla Hotel on Concha Molida. Trini and Eldamira, the "phone lady" (she opened up the only phone in town every evening) 4) Don Jesús (Chewy) and his family. His son, Gilberto (who is standing on the wall in the blue jeans), looks a bit different these days, verdad? 5) Other than Mama Linda's with her infamous pot of posole (now the liquor store on the corner by the church), this taco stand was the only other place to eat "on the street", but you never knew whether he would decide to open or not - great tacos de res. Our maid this year (Chela Garcia) told us she used to work there back in the day. 6) Town for more see part 2 |
