Snake

Found a tiny snake in our house tonight. Mostly black with orange markings on back, about 8 inches long, very fast. Only saw it for an instant so not a good description, but - any ideas as to identity? We have small children visiting so there's a little concern. Don't want any small humans getting bitten.
