Vehicle Permit - The Process

Many people, myself included, have kept a vehicle in Mexico with expired foreign plates. We understood that this was legal as long as we held an FM2 or FM3 that was renewed each year according to the regulations. Now, with the new category of "Residente Temporal", good for one year or more, there is confusion over whether or not our vehicle permits, obtained at the border when the vehicle entered Mexico, was still valid.

There is no one answer to this question. Some report receiving tickets for expired permits, others fear their Mexican insurance may not be valid.

I went to ADUANA yesterday and got my permit, so now I breathe a little easier. Hear is how it works:

Take with you 2 copies of your passport, Residente Temporal card and Vehicle Importation Permit (the one your windshield sticker came off of). They will give you a form to fill out 3 times, all of the information comes from the paperwork you provided. You give one set back to you to take to the payment wicket, where it is stamped and given back to you. No charge.

Viola!

There is no expiry date on this permit, but one might speculate that it would expire when you Residente Temporal visa expires.

By the way, no English spoken here, but they seem to know what you want.

Have a Residente Permanante? Maybe someone else has the answer.
