The Mexican Tourism Secretariat created the idea of Magic Towns (Pueblos Mágicos)in 2001. Ranging from undiscovered villages on the coast to sizeable inland cities, they all have in common some truly special cultural, historic or social importance. As well, they must meet certain practical criteria - e.g., suitable accommodation, restaurants. There are at least 36 communities which have received this designation to date. The closest Magic Town to La Manzanilla is Comala, just outside Colima.

Towns accepted into the program have access to federal funds for publicity and improvements, with the intention of making them more appealing as a tourist detination.

Not sure how La Manzanilla would meet the cultural, historical or social importance criteria though.
