Getting Mexican Plates for my Car

....Does anyone have firsthand experience in taking their car to the Customs Officals at the boarder in order to change plates from US to Mexico? What is the procedure? I've heard that the fees are really high, even for older cars and hardly worth the bother...better to take car back to US and sell it and get another Mexican plated car here.... i have a 1998 For Explorer worth about 3,000-$4000 USD....I have also been told that cars down here are more expensive that in the US and better to keep the old Ford and pay the customs!! I'm confused!! (more than usual!) Any ideas???
