Spring News 2013!

Computer Lab Is Coming to Life!

This spring our community computer literacy lab is coming to life! Check out our video, produced by Miriam Henze who grew up in La Manzanilla and got her degree in film at the University of Guadalajara. Click here to watch a video and find out how this project came about and to hear some of our scholarship students talk about why they so dearly need this to be able to succeed in school…

A generous donation has allowed us to start preparations on the classroom, which include putting on a permanent cement roof and installing security, proper electrical wiring and air conditioning and purchasing some of the computers to get the lab operational. Additional funds will be needed to not only finish setting up the lab but also to run classes, buy software, and staff and maintain the lab. For more information on the lab budget or to see a copy of our Computer Lab Project Plan, please contact us.

Mural-to-be!
With the spring comes beautification projects at the foundation! Scholarship students and other folks from the town are gathering with artist & Wings Scholarship Program Mentor, Rodrigo Rodriguez, to design and paint a mural on the wall of our newly-finished second classroom which now houses art, English, early education classes and more!

In addition to teaching the students the art of making a mural, Rodrigo plans to focus on training the students how to develop discipline from the start to finish of a project. The students will learn how to work diligently as artists, including wearing masks and proper work clothes while painting, mixing paints and cleaning their brushes. Also, showing up on time for the project and being reliable will be emphasized.

9th Annual Auction & Donations to Schools
With the tremendous support of volunteers who worked at the events and individuals and businesses who donated goods or services, a record-breaking amount of 91,527 pesos was raised in the combined events (the online and live event). Wings Scholarship Program
Thanks to the participation of our Wings’ scholarship sponsors, we have a whopping 32 students in the program this year!!! Special acknowledgement goes to Jacqueline Walters & Deborah Hawksley for their steadfast commitment to seeing that each and every one of our La Manzanilla student candidates was matched with a sponsor.

Highlights of the 2012-13 school years’ program include:

Omar Alejandro Bravo Acevedo, our star Wings scholar from the neighboring town of Miguel Hidalgo, graduated from University of Londres at the top of his class, earning a law degree. He will continue in the fall of 2014 on a Wings scholarship to complete a Master’s Degree!

Both of our two senior-year scholarship students, Maria Jhennifer Chavez Mendoza & Isis Joseline Murillo Macias, who are graduating from high school in July, have registered to attend University in the fall! Jhennifer plans to study to become a doctor and Isis plans to study Tourism. Thanks to their dedicated sponsors Helping Hands Bookstore and William Albritton, for seeing them all the way through high school!
