A rare close grouping of 3 planets will be visible for the next several evenings. Jupiter, Venus and Mercury are coming toghether for their closest conjunction until 2021. They will dance around one another, changing positions visibly each evening. On Sunday they will be in a tight triangle. Look low in the west-northwest 30-45 minutes after sunset (sunset is 8:30, so go look around 9:00-9:15.) Venus and Jupiter should be easily visible (they are brighter than any star), if the sky is clear down near the horizon. Mercury is quite a bit dimmer. Binoculars might help. This site has some simulated views af the grouping, and at the top of the page is a video showing what the dance looks like night by night: http://www.skyandtelescope.com/observing/ataglance?pos=left Enjoy! |
