Hi Kate,
Yes, I had to bring my original title to the border, that is necessary because they stamp the back and give you a new document to say it's imported. You do not need a current registration for the car, what I mean that I have not registered my car with Colorado plates in CO or in the U.S. since 2010 and that was fine.
