Regarding the message that the locals are afraid to talk about who these men might be... I spoke to a local via skype last week and they told me that the thieves are from the town just before you drive into Melaque. There are apparently three of them and they have a truck.
They also "hit" our family member's home last week on Playa Dorado and the house behind it. The neighbor heard noise but did not call anyone for help or to investigate. They stole some tools.
