This is great news for anyone affected by bad weather (not just tropical storms,) which is just about everyone in North and Central America. The payoff from more detailed and accurate forecasts should cover that financial investment many times over.

I wonder how big that supercomputer cluster is? ("213 teraflops? Where are we going to get 213 teraflops?")

Now if we could do something about the aging fleet of weather satellites, which provide much of the raw data for these supercomputer models. But I know that would take a little more than US$20 million...

"We were essentially riding on our spare tire," said atmospheric scientist Marshall Shepherd at the University of Georgia, who is president of the American Meteorological Society. "And that spare is in the twilight of its career." (From WSJ article)
