Great article in July 26 Wall Street Journal on retiring way south of the boarder. It seems that some other countries are more liberal and generous in their desire to attract present and future retirees. Panama: income requirement: $1000 amn a month vehicle fees: tax exempt car importation every 2 years other benefits : lots of discounts regardless of age belize: income requirement : $2000 amn a month vehicle fees : duty free every 2 years other benefits : duty free light aircraft, boats and other belongings Nicaragua: income requirement : $600 amn a month vehicle fees : no import fees for vehicle valued at $25,000 or less other benefits : buy car locally and avoid import fees The move by Mexico to move to change the forbidden zone property laws is a move in the right direction but if they want to compete they need to become more accomadative as the competition continues to strengthen.
