Thanks for the link David. I found the book On the Road online and read the part about Mexico. It starts about 1/3 of the way down this page, just a paragraph above the number 5. http://terebess.hu/english/ontheroad4.html I haven't read the rest of the book, nor any of his other writing about Mexico but can say that the Mexico he and his friends found back then is alive and well in La Manzanilla and the Mexico I know. The writer of the Times article stayed in fancy places which Kerouac had no interest in yet still seemed to find parts of the Mexico experience Kerouac referred to, which is a testament as to just how pervasive the spirit of Mexico is. It is the people of Mexico who are the foundation of the wonderful Mexico experience and I don't see that changing anytime soon. I enjoyed the comments by the NY Times readers as well. http://travel.nytimes.com/2013/10/13/travel/kerouacs-mexico.html?pagewanted=5&_r=0#commentsContainer |
