In this writer's humble opinion(cough cough), the Soxs and the Cards games are tame compared to the Battle of the Cupcakes, that was played out on the field this afternoon here in La Manzanilla.

Today's game was the final practice/fun/exhibition game of the pre-season. There were thrills, chills, spills and more as the Lobos and Osos clawed for the win.
Each team carried a roster of twelve players today, a little hectic at first as 11 of them all want to play 3rd base. Thankyou Lyle for knowing your position at short stop, and actually playing there!

The Osos batted first. Pacho Victoria pitched for the Lobos, walked the first two batters, then struck out Alexander, one of the bigger bats of the Osos. Another walk followed,oh oh bases were loaded. Now Pacho stood on the mound restlessly rolling the ball in his hand,a bead of sweat on his brow, looked nervously at the bases and then at the batter. A potential grand slam stared back at him. Then with a determined shake of his head and a deep breath, he threw the first pitch--Strike One, called the umpire, a slow smile came to Pacho's face, and with a little more confidence, shot off the second pitch--Strike Two was the call. Now the smile widened to that "cocky" grin and away went the third pitch--Ball 1!!! The grin disappeared in an instant, but the determination stayed. The next ball was Strike 3, Batter out, and the Grand Slam was avoided--momemtarily at least. Unfortunately for Pacho, Bryon the Bomber was up to bat next!! 2 out, bases loaded, and Bryon at bat. Things did not look well for Pacho, but that wily little wolf walked him! Yes deliberatly walked him, thus avoiding a Grand Slam, and only allowing 1 run to walk home. The next batter was out on a pop up fly ball, and Pacho could start breathing normally again.

Lobos batted next bringing in a respectable four runs before having to return to the field.
Now the innings became tighter, runs were harder to come by as double plays were made and runners were caught in hot boxes and one triple play by the Osos kept everyone's attention riveted on the field.
The innings were pretty evenly played out, 3 runs here, 4 runs there etc. until the game was in a dead lock 9-9 at the end of fifth inning.

A tie at the end of the game no no no that would never do!! We needed a winning team this time. there were cupcakes on the line. (That and the fact I only made a dozen because I hadn't expected a tie game. These kids delight in surprising me!)
This meant overtime!!
One more inning, Lobos turn, scored a run, now if they could only hold off the Osos one last time, but sadly no, Osos scored 2 for the win.

But never give up my little Lobos, there will be another Battle of the Cupcakes in the near future I promise.

Next Monday, the competition begins. I'm sure all the games will be just as exciting as this one was because the kids have now have a goal to work for each week. There is a championship game coming!!

Hope to see some of you folks out to cheer the teams on, the kids really appreciate your cheers!
Mondays at 4 pm at the soccer field
