Melody’s Dream
Melody:
“My girlfriend and I were planning a trip to Roatan until we discovered they’d had record cases of Dengue Fever in the past year. Been there! Done That in Tailand. Took six months out of my life. Cancelled trip. That same night I had a vivid dream. I was sitting on a bus and asked the lady next to me, ‘Where is this bus going?’
‘To Colima.’
When I woke up, I remembered Colima was in Mexico. Okey-dokey. I’ll fly to Mexico City, pay my respects to Our Lady of Guadalupe, see the butterflies, and relax on a beach somewhere.
Walking down the road from the volcano in Colima I see a main road with a bus stop. Twenty young children are milling about so I ask, as a bus approaches, ‘Where does this bus go?’ A woman I hadn’t seen says, ‘This bus is going to Colima.’
Whooa, I think, remembering my dream, I’d better sit next to her. I mention my vacation is drawing to a close and I had still not found a beach.
‘Well, my son Dave (Collins) lives in a town I think you’d like called La Manzanilla.’
Asking the first Gringa I see in La Manzanilla, ‘What are the best restaurants?’
She answers, ‘Martin’s, Quetzal (now in Melaque), and Palapa Joe’s.’
Heading off to Martin’s, I spy a staircase on my left. Something mysterious pulls me up those stairs. It’s completely out of my character to be so bold, and I think, You sure are cheeky, this could be someone’s house for God’s sake. Halfway up I see a sign that says Quetzal and decide to eat here instead. On the top floor, under a palapa, all tables are empty except one. A gentleman graciously asks if I would like to join him. I sit down.
‘My name is Ron,’ he says, where are you from?’
‘Taos, New Mexico,’ I reply to a peal of laughter. ‘What the heck’s so funny?’
‘Most of my possessions are in storage in Taos, and I’ve been looking for property in the area for the last two summers.’”

Ron:
“As I walk in the sand on the ocean side of a beachfront restaurant (now Yolanda’s), I see an intriguing woman sitting in a low-slung beach chair reading a book. I say, ‘Looks like you’re having fun!” she smiles but says nothing (Melody doesn’t remember this part). I continue on to join my friends for a beer at a nearby table.
A couple of hours later I’m sitting at Quetzal when that same woman enters. I ask if she would like to join me, and laugh when I find out we both live in Taos and that our post office boxes face each other. And I’m shocked by our instant rapport. Within 5 minutes we are sharing the two most poignant moments of our childhoods. We also talk about some of the silly stuff we have in common; same detachable key chains, both have aunts named Mildred, and both are third born in our families.
Back in Taos, at Melody’s house a few months later, I receive a new Visa card. I look at the pin number and discover it is Melody’s exact day, month, and year of birth. Too much! My resistance weakens.
Back in Mexico the following winter my friends say, ‘Don’t let this one go Ron. She is special.’ Not normally being the sharpest pin in the cushion concerning these kinds of romantic decisions, I do take another serious look, recognize how unique Melody really is, stop resisting altogether, and fall in love. I still am in love.
We will celebrate out 10th anniversary on March 8th.
Thank you, Melody.”
