Decades ago, I drove part way down Baja California and took the overnight ferry from Santa Rosalia to Guaymas (sp?)and found it fascinating. The deadly part was having to drive through big-city California and having to sit throughout the night as access to the car was not possible once we set sail. That was a loooooooooong time ago; things may have changed, but it offers another option for your Googling pleasure.
