Mexican Immigration

Last month I posted inquiring about new immigration rules, and was routinely referred to the Rolly homesite. I took the advice on the Rolly site, filled out the online application (with help from Pedro, because the site instructed that it had to be filled out in Spanish) and returned to California to submit my application for a temporary resident visa in Sacramento. Prior to departure, I went to Melaque to get my visa pictures (the real small ones which, as I was instructed, I was not to smile).

Once at the Mexican consulate at Sacramento, I was informed that the application had changed, no longer used. However, the new application permitted responses in English which I was allowed to fill out at the counter. I was told that I could apply for a temporary or permanent residence visa, and opted for the temporary because that is what my wife (Kathy B) has. I was further given an interview date within two weeks at which I was supposed to bring stamped and signed the financial docs I submitted in support of my application.

I just got back from the consulate. There was no interview, no one asked for the stamped and signed copies of my financial docs. I was fingerprinted, photographed and walked away with a permanent resident visa. My non-smiling pictures were returned along with the permanent visa which I never requested, but am happy to have.

I'm not sure if every Mexican consulate is so easy to work with, but thought others would like to know of my experience.
