That creature is actually a "Beaded LIzard". It's a relative of the famous "GIla monster" of the northern deserts, but not as poisonous and usually very afraid of others. They have to actually chew on their prey (or dog) to get any the poison in. The saliva is what has enzymes that is dangerous They burrow into mud banks to lay their eggs. Hope the pup is OK.
