I have to agree with Scott's sensible assessment. Even with all the enormous changes I've seen since my first visit over 30 years ago, I cannot believe how little the true "flavour" of LM has changed, i.e. the same amazing friendly people and mostly empathetic "hueros".

And although I wouldn't want to think that a potential ATM should be regarded like The Borg ("Resistance is futile!"), I think its' benefits will outweigh any perceived threats to the way of life in LM. Does anybody really want to go back to the days when there was no internet (egads!!), no police, no doctor, dirt streets, no mosquito control for dengue, no Pedros tacos!? Not all progress is bad... And while it may be sort of typical and makes for an engaging anecdote of LM life, nobody really likes the frustration when you do need cash and the ATM in Melaque is being "irritable", shall we say. Evidence the many posts here over the years about that often unreliable machine. Even though I understand all too well that "patience is a virtue" that is best kept in mind while in México.

I also agree with Rob, Kim and others that it's LM that decides it's path. And why not have the choice to use it or not? Even with an ATM, I would still plan to go over to Melaque sometimes for the slightly bigger choice in food shopping, a tasty lunch somewhere and because it's a fun little adventure on the bus and it's also well... "something to do". As for it causing more crime, is that always what happens when an ATM is installed or just a worry of what could happen? Location for the ATM will be key and there are obvious ways to reduce the threat.

This is a good debate.... thanks andre, troublemaker! 8-)
