How sad and the other sad part is nobody comments. The other sad part is it was up on the Ajijic board a couple times and the mod just deletes them. Sure it may hurt some peoples income but to hide the incident does a disservice to us all. It won't stop me from relocating to Mexico in May or my trip next week but it will make me all the more alert.

Tragic? Yes, of course.

Comment worthy? Well, maybe. But maybe not on this La-Manzanilla-centric board. Unless there's a LM tie (more than both are in Mexico), I don't see lack of comments here as inappropriate/callous/anything.

We are staying in Ajijic and it is the big topic of conversation amongst Canadians, Americans and Mexicans. Due to an unfortunate cold I was at the Dr's office with my husband. The Dr. asked if we had heard the news, which we had not, so he filled us in. He personally knew the couple and was very upset and outraged. They were in a gated community and unfortunately came home and disturbed the intruders. Apparently both their high end trucks were taken. We have talked to many Mexicans who have expressed their anger and sadness for such tragedy. The police presence in town is overwhelming with helicopters, Federal and local police rushing about.

We still feel safe and are not any more or less worried about our safety. We do send our prayers to the family and friends of the deceased couple.

There may be more to this story than originally thought or covered by the news, you might be surprised as to why it really happened, I don't think this is as random of an attack as you might think, stay tuned for more information

esmitty, I'm not sure why you felt the need to make that comment.
I think it's important for us to be informed. I think it's important for us to share information. I think it's important for us to be alerted, in this small community of snowbirds and ex-pats, to what's going on around us.
I did not know these people, but I do know people in Ajijic who did. I know 'a' story, from them, and, as I understand it, this is not a random act, though it has nothing to do with the world of drugs.
I've learned something from what I've heard. I've learned something that will inform my actions in this country and, probably, at home.
When the drug cartels do dreadful things, we hear about it whether we want to or not, and that's not likely to touch most of our lives. When these, seemingly 'random' acts occur close to our homes either here or NOB, I think we need to know about them in order to govern our lives in a way that will keep us safe, to the best of our abilities, without turning us into fraidie cats or vigilantes.
Information is just that: information. It provides us with materials, some of which may contribute to the framework upon which we construct our lives.

I am not callous or trivializing this act.

As an example, however, I live about 4 hours south of Oakland, California. I also live 5 hours north of Compton, California. Lots of heinous, random, senseless violent crime in both of those cities. But than news never makes it to our town website, and is very seldom carried in our local papers, or even our regional TV.

To your point, however: I am not sure why I felt the need to make the comment, either.

.......from an Ajijic resident's blog........

Nina Discombe and Edward Kular’s Deaths

I am so relieved to report that one of the men responsible for my friends’ death has been apprehended and is in jail. They are presently in pursuit of his brother, who reportedly assisted in the robbery and murder. The American Consul has assured us that our region of Lake Chapala is not on the “Do Not Travel” list and that they consider this to be an isolated incident and not of danger to travelers and residents. The chief of police assured us that this was a robbery, not a revenge killing, and that Nina and Edward’s deaths were swift and that they did not suffer unduly. The robbers were unaware of their presence in the house and when they discovered their presence, they killed them out of fear of being recognized and caught. We are all so sad about the death of our friends but also anxious that people not panic over this horrible act which echoes so many other violent actions in the world. The poem that I published in my last blog seems to be all the more true at this point. Nina was a happy person who loved Mexico. She would be the last to want people to live in fear. I saw Edward a few days before his death and we had a discussion about his family’s fears about his return to Mexico, given his health issues. One of the last comments that passed between us was our agreement that it does no good to live in fear–that we must live the lives we want to live for as long as we can. Edward lived up to this declaration.

I was aware of a totally different story than was originally published and circulated however, I was hestitant to pass it along until it was confirmed by someone else. Here is what I received today:

Just got this e-mail from a good friend of ours who lives in La Floresta, close to where the couple were murdered. The Media got it wrong again. It was a revenge attack, and not a straight robbery.

Cruz Roja is the Red Cross Hospital which is free.

I hope the stories that are being circulated by the media start telling the true story that this was a planned revenge
attack and not a random break in. I feel this is important to our community that the truth be known.

On Feb 11, 2014, at 8:51 AM, M Smith wrote:
Just had a phone call, they have all three suspects in custody. One had gotten a stab wound in his hand and went to Cruz Rojo, the doctor called police and he gave up the other two. The murders were allegedly done in response to victums complaint about animal abuse and noise which had resulted in the workers next door getting fired, they decided to rob the victums but were surprised by them, knowing that they would be recognized, they responded in killing them.

As we have found so many times, initial reports are not always accurate and certainly it would appear that the facts are rarely confirmed before going to press or the media.

Putus...
Have you gone to the athorities, am sure there is an animal shelter, vet, cop, animal clinic up there.
What about talking to neighbors on the other side of animal abuse house.
If you were here, someone would more than likely get involved and help you!!
Hope all works out, as it kills me to hear this.

After all there is a new law on the books about animal cruelty!!!

K. Went over there with a neighbor as a witness. Gate locked so went over the fence. Am now trespassing! Beautiful husky mix female dog is tied to a tree with a wire cable. No food, no water - in this heat! Breaks my heart. Had no clippers to cut her loose, so brought her water and will make sure she is fed. I have since been told that at this time of the year, expats returning north for the summer often abandon animals like that.Dog cries all night so there is a nuisance factor as well. Called my landlord about it and he promised to look into it. He does not want a confrontation with the property owner, he would prefer to talk to the property owner. One of his staff seems to know the people who own the property. As it is a big holiday weekend here, everything seems to be closed until Monday. If nothing is done by Monday, I will be going to the authorities myself. Will keep you posted.
