Don Concho is gone

Disheartening news that perhaps the last of the La Manzanilla founders and gentlemen is gone. He was 96+ and passed yesterday early in the morning. He will be buried today after a 10:00 mass. He passed gently.

I loved him as a very kind and loving person who was lucid until the end. Don Concho was deep and soft and he takes many important La Manzanilla memories with him. His life is a tribute to being valiant and true to ones beliefs. He never sold out and La Manzanilla coast is free and open for us to enjoy because of his and his companero's effort and sacrifices back in 1937.

Descansa en paz, mi amigo. Your presence will always be with me. Cruz

I hope that David Dagoli can post Don Concho's wonderful picture taken last year or maybe Daniel can do his magic and bring it up.

I'm so glad I got to meet Don Concho, and thank you for that, Cruz.

Talking with him, we were struck by his honesty and sense of justice. In my opinion, he was a true hero of the people, the kind of person you rarely meet.

He was a good and brave man, and he deserves to rest now. Muchísimas gracias, Don Concho!

Gracias, Dan. I knew you could and probably would.

I keep thinking of Don Concho this morning. He was a sweet ole soul. I would want to scoop him up and put him in my pocket, a cute button. In his day, the women would want to purloin him away as he was a sweet heart according to several. You can see it in his bright eyes.

Although he was as firm as steel he was willing to admit that he was fightened by the horrible events of 1937 and his eventual arrest although innocent. A LM icon for sure and the mold may have been thrown away for I have seen few like him. When I walk the beach I will thank him for his perseverance in helping keep La Manzanilla free and open so I could walk it whenever.

Mi amiguito bueno, te quiero and a toast to you, Cruz

For those of us who are always in awe of wise and just elders the world over, could someone possibly retell the events of 1937.

I hope that some public facility or street might be named after him in commemoration and gratitude for his preserving this beauty for all to enjoy.

Thank you for sharing the story of Don Concho and the link to the story of the struggle with the developer who tried to take over the beautiful beach and village of La Manzanilla - and the sad loss of Don Concho's wife and baby. He sacrificed for the good of the whole and the future. It also helped round out the story of the 'Ruined Hotel' down the beach. From the interview last year, it sounded like it happened in the 1950's.

Mi amigo, Don Concho, had a befitting burial with Mariachi music and the town out to say adios. Even a lone crocodile appeared to watch the somber procession.

My friend Rita, who often tells me the town's history, said that Don Concho was a straight citizen and when he was Delegado, he did everything by the book. But at the same time was very careful not to offend anyone even when they asked him to do otherwise. He was tactful and non-judgmental winning much respect and an honored place in the community. I was not surprised to hear this as this is how I knew him.

I cry now because the era of the gentelman, a person of his or her word and integrity, is hard to find, almost extinct some times. And when I do come across them I want to preserve them and keep them forever. Cruz
