Cuzalapa Coffee Tour

Posted by Nancy W on March 19, 2014, 11:33 am

We are wanting to run a tour to Cuzalapa next Monday, March 24th or Wednesday, March 26th. We just need one more person to sign up to make it happen! Please send me an email or drop by the office if you're interested in this amazing trip!

Here's the tour description and some background info.

Background
Cuzalapa Coffee Cooperative is a group of primarily women that have joined together to try to save their century-old organic shade-grown coffee and fruit plantations from being transformed into pasture land, corn fields, and other such short-term solutions. Supporting the Cuzalapa Coffee Cooperative means supporting the sustainable development (achieved through the use and sale of produce, and by ecotourism efforts) of the town of Cuzalapa and the biodiversity surrounding it by paying a fair-trade price to the Cuzalapa Coffee Cooperative. Through this effort the community-owned fruit tree and coffee plantations around Cuzalapa, within the Sierra Manantlán Biosphere Reserve, will be protected from deforestation and the fruits of the cooperative´s labor will be rewarded with the opportunity for them to continue living as stewards of the environment in the land of their ancestors.

Tour Description
The tour departs at 8:30 a.m. and returns by about 5:30 p.m. Plan on four hours of driving in total. We arrive at the Cuzalapa Cooperative cultural center in the morning where we are served a fresh-baked treat and a local coffee or mojote (Maya nut) cappuccino. We will receive a talk about the history of the Cuzalapa Cooperative. Then we´ll head out walking with binoculars and spotting scope into a nearby polyculture shade-grown coffee plantation where we´ll learn about the ecology of this unique human-planned ecosystem while also observing whatever birds we can find within it. We return for an amazing lunch prepared with local organic ingredients from the area before heading home.

Cost: $100 US/person, or $1,300 pesos.

Please let me know if you'd like to book!
