The Ferry From La Paz to Mazatlan

Posted by Dean & Judy on March 20, 2014, 9:12 am

Has anyone done the drive down Baja and taken the overnight ferry to Mazatlan? Was just curious as I may try this route when I come down.
I would think it would be somewhat quicker than that long drive to Tucson and down to Nogales.
Anyone???

I made the trip several years ago, from north to south the baja drive is long (1000 miles), boring and the roads are not up to anyones standard, No toll roads. About the ferry trip, well it is an overnight venture to say the least. It leaves La Paz mid day and arrives (if it is not late) mid morning. The good part is that is lands at the south end of Mazatlan so driving out of town is no big deal. As as as it being faster, I would certainly doubt that. The only thing I can say is that it is a different trip seeing an entirely different part of Mexico. If you want more information, email me and I will fill you in on the details.

Erin, thank you for the swift response and agreed, probably boring as when I was living in San Diego the trip to Ensenada was just that...

Decades ago, I drove part way down Baja California and took the overnight ferry from Santa Rosalia to Guaymas (sp?)and found it fascinating. The deadly part was having to drive through big-city California and having to sit throughout the night as access to the car was not possible once we set sail.
That was a loooooooooong time ago; things may have changed, but it offers another option for your Googling pleasure.

I've driven the Baja Hwy 1 about 15 times in the past 6 years. There are a few sections that need some help but the drive is just beautiful. You travel from the Pacific side to Sea of Cortez a few times. The only part now closed is at K-58 between TJ and Ensenada. The road collapsed (200 yards of road) about 4 months ago due to heavy rains and a few small quakes. There's about a 3 hour detour that take you through the wine country. Old road but good. You'll love Baja

We took the trip many years ago. We always loved the ride down through many types of terraine, amazing desert scenes meeting the ocean. the ferry was an experience for sure. We ended up on the deck with the kids and because of inexperience we were on the windward side, cold! The lee side was full. the salon we could not go in for the smell of vomit and overflowing toilets, that was the worst parts. Otherwise, we enjoyed the spontaneous music and singing on deck and the arrival in Mazatlan. I'd say bring a blanket and some food.

Not to discourage, and it can be quite interesting, but make sure you know what to expect before committing to a crossing. It can be a little expensive if you have a couple of passengers ( I guess it depends on your definition of expensive, though). Add a trailer and the price really goes up. If the weather is marginal it can be a rough ride. Some people don't expect that. Be sure and total the cost and check the weather before traveling. With the right expectations it is a good experience.
