some sad news

Posted by silver mangini on March 26, 2014, 10:06 pm

For those of you who were in LM in the early 2000's, I thought you would want to know of the passing of Malcolm West.. He died last night in his sleep in his cabin in Anderson Valley, California. Malcolm spent a winter at my home and was seen often plein air painting his wonderful watercolors at the beach.. boats were his delight.. he had a show at the Galeria La Manzanilla from that winters work and was nearly sold out.
Malcolm was a kind, smart, loving and gentle man who was also a fabulous artist.. he spent the last few years struggling with throat cancer.. and was 68 years old.. I know those of you who spent time with him will join me in sending his spirit on its way.. thanks, Silver

Very sad to read this. He was so talented. We used to watch him paint all the time here and there. We were reminded of him just the other day when a friend showed us a picture of his in their Casa.

Thanks for posting this sad bit of news, Silver. I do remember him on the beach with his brushes. His work caught the spirit of La Manz.

It is with great sadness that I read of Malcolm's passing. I only have to lift my eyes from the keyboard, to be cheered by his brilliance and the wonderful memory of sitting with him, on the beach, as he painted my most prized artwork.

Thank you, Malcolm.

So sad. We often think of Malcolm visiting with us at our house on his way home after his day of painting. We treasure those times along with his paintings.

Thank you Silver for letting us know.

I am just now hearing of my Malcolm's passing. We were very close in the San Francisco and Alameda areas of California. I heard much about you Silver and you have described him most eloquently. I see his spirit in the night sky. Thank you.

I will treasure his water colors we have. What a lovely gentle soul he was. I'm going to look at his art right now and thank him for his ability to capture the peaceful essence of la manzanilla. Big sigh!

Thanks Silver. Unfortunately, I had tried for eight months to get news of him from Margaret who now owns all his paintings and belongings. I am concluding, though she gave him a place to stay while he passed on to that sweet place he's in, that she is unkind. He and I traveled to Puerto Vallarta and loved Mexico as the two of you did. Your posting this site means I got to say how I felt about him.

Thank you Silver for letting us know. I did not have the pleasure of knowing him but had heard a lot about his wonderful ways.
Much love to you for being his friend

Silver,
Would you please delete my last message. Are any of Malcolm's Mexico paintings for sale? Any web site where I might see them? Thank you, Patty

Silver, thanks for posting. It is always sad to hear of an artist passing on. I regret that I didn't know him better. Glad a lot of people have his paintings.
