Tejón

We were at Rocio's, the Veteranarian in La Manzanilla, where I spotted a "Tejón" tied to a tree in her yard. We see them on our property from time to time.

Tejónes (coatimundi) live in the jungle or mangrove around here.

I have to admit--I always feel bad when I see this guy tied to that tree....

I'll ask again about him on Saturday when we go back...

Is Rocio doing this sad thing?

I live across the street from Roccio, the Vet and watch every
morning from my balcony the care given to this tejon.
He is brought out from his cage/bed and played with, fed,
cuddled, let go for a run around the yard, tussles with the dogs, holds his own, jumps into Roccios arms, get treats, cuddles, kisses - quiet a site. At first, he paced back and
forth on his line but now seems more content.
He also has a tree to climb, and I see him leap up
and scurry up and down playfully.
Not a bad life!!

It was found injured as a baby. He never learned how to survive on the jungle. He would die if he was released. Rocío is his hero.

I am so glad to hear that. I hate when people capture wild animals and keep them as pets in cages or on a leash.

I, too, have an aversion like Helga's, yet I guess that's what 'we' did with dogs, all those centuries ago . . . and, to quote a four-year-old whom I know: Look what ya get! :o)

Rocio told me today that her tejón was brought in to her clinic as a mal-nourished and sick baby. Rocio nursed her (she's a girl) back to health, and calls her "Chiquilla". She is now 7 months old.

The tejón is quite friendly, but Rocio says she is still wild and may try to bite you, so be careful!

Here's another photo of Chiquilla from today. She seems to be able to stand on her back legs for some time!

Chi quills is a very handsome young lady. Coatimundies, in English, or Tejons, in Spanish, are members of the raccoon family and are curious, friendly, playfully and very easily tamed. They make good pets but be aware that their nimble paws quickly learn to open cabinets, drawers and even refrigerators.
