As I wrote to Judy earlier, I believe it's in the Laelia family. It's a high elevation orchid that has beautiful flowers this time of year.

Judy, Try "Laeliocattleya". That appears to be the closest to what I can find in my "Orchid" book and it does say that it is native to "Central America". I hope this helps. Andrei

For the record, Mexico is in North America and Latin America, a subregion of the Americas, but it's not in Central America.

FYI: In some parts of Mexico it is illegal to sell wild orchids. While in Veracruz I was only able to buy two that had been grown in an approved orchid nursery where they were raised. Even if it is not enforced ;{ in most areas of Mexico you might want to ask before you buy and thus educate those who sell them that taking them from the wild is devastating to our environment. This region has been depleted of much its flora in the same way. They like parrots...are much more enjoyed in the wild. Or we might only have photos to enjoy in the future. Very lovely photo though.

Justin, At one time Mexico was part of Aztec and Mayan empires which extended to include Guatemala and Honduras both of which are clearly included in "Central America" ergo, at one time Mexico was "politically" part of "Central America where these orchids grow. This lesson in geography and history is not necessary as we were ONLY trying to identify the orchid.

Let me give you a lesson in geography and history to point out your lesson in geography and history is not relevant.

Andrei, You brought up history. not me. I'm talking about TODAY. History tells us that most of southern US was part of Mexico . . AND that Wolfe won. So what? TODAY, Mexico is in North America . . . NOT Central America. May bright, bright sunshine fill your day TODAY!!!

I still think that this is a beautiful orchid, regardless of how far south along Mexico/Honduras/Guatemala it originated from. I enjoy their beauty and maybe you should try that.

I have to add my orchid knowledge here. Laelia's, of which this orchid in a member , grow throughout Mexico at the higher elevations. They are abundant in and around Tapalpa at 6000ft+. If you want to try to identify this particular orchid have a try @ www.amo.com.mx/indexesp.html It should keep everyone busy and fascinated at the incredible #'s of native orchids in Mexico. The photographs are outstanding. Sad to say the largest # of these orchids can not live on the coast. It's just too hot, but we do have many beautiful ones. Habitate destruction is the greatest threat to orchids around the world. In the past many here in Mexico thought/think that they are parasites and kill the trees they are living in so they cut the trees down -go figure. Many are burned/killed by the "slash and burn" process of clearing for cattle. And yes many are taken by poaching-sadly to die in someone's kitchen window or eaten by their horse. Yes, I bought one from a street vendor . He had no idea of what it was only that his horse liked to eat it . It's leaves were eaten to the roots. I can proudly say it is now thriving, multiplying and spreading it's seeds on the wind . A good read on this subject is "The Orchid Thief".

The vendor in Manzanillo had a licence to grow these beautiful Orchids he had after I asked him where he found them. He is at the Club Santiago at the end towards all the Mexican Restaurants. 220 Pesos each.

Dear Justin R. Sol and Daniel Hallas, One LAST response. If you want to TEACH people regarding geography maybe check your "knowledge" with; - Encyclopedia Britannica and the United Nations web sites regarding this topic, I did, PRIOR to making statements. Andrei
