Moving the Tianguis

There's a movement a foot to remove the Tianguis from the Jardin on Fridays. Please sign the petition today. If you can't find it, please talk to Linda Mandala. She will fill you in on the details and direct you to the petition. Some of the venders will be in different neighborhoods to talk to the locals and try to get their support too.

Has anyone talked to the Mayor and found out why (and for sure) he wants
to do this? What is the lodgic behind it?

My understanding, from Linda, is that he wants them GONE, FOREVER, not just moved.
I have signed the petition and have sent out an email to friends who might not read about it on the board.

Misunderstanding?

Mokita, it seems it is the delegado who is wanting to move or get rid of the tianguis, not the gringos.

Mokita,

Supposedly it is the Mayor (who has lived in La Manzanilla most of his life)
who is requesting the Tianges leave. I don't think you got that part?

I am not in LM at the moment and would like to sign the petition to keep the tiangis in the jardin. It would be a terrible loss to the community. Is it possible to post an online petition?

I spoke to the Mayor this morning. He explained that La Huerta is the force behind moving the Tiangus to a location other than the Jardin.

This also affects our local merchants, food vendors, etc., who will not be able to use the jardin for commercial purposes in the future.

I beleive the goal is to restore the Jardin to noncommercial space that is always available for the use of the townspeople.

There is no move to eliminate the Tiangus from La Manzanilla.

Trying to stay out of the local issue of which I do not know the rationale or process, but here is a bigger picture for those who don't know about tianguis:

Tianguis is the Nahuatl word for open, informal, and temporary market. These have existed in Mexico since pre-Hispanic times and for many it is a critical part of the culture as well as a way to generate an informal income. There has been a bit of a conflict in various local Mexican communities about regulating these markets for differing reasons, but usually it is about taxes, product control, safety issues, and legal permits. Some communities want to move the Tianguis to a regular mercado scheme with business licenses, an end to bootleg products, and for tighter municipal control of safety issues. Usually this process is a bit like herding cats - lots of effort but ultimately not always very successful.

This would be such a loss. Lots of these vendors are my friends and I would miss this colorful event.

We've been coming to LM each year for ~15 years, and the Tianguis is a special part of our experience there. Each Friday we have an early breakfast at Cafe Risa and watch the Tianguis emerge. Somehow we are able to purchase a bit of something each Friday.

I'm sure that it is a challenge to manage, and hopefully the community is able to extract a bit of money from the vendors for that effort, but not knowing the intricacies of that relationship, I am only guessing.

We truly support the current location, and encourage the continuation of the event.

One of the most charming things about Mexico, for a gringo like me, is the laid back , lack of rules and regulations. Here in Canada , we need a permit and safety regulations and another fee and another permit to do just about anything. Take fireworks for example. As I consider myself a guest when I spend my winters in La Manzanilla, it's not up to me and petitions and rallies can be a pain. But it's sad to see some of that lovely Mexican charm get pushed aside. Good luck to the vendors. And the ones on the beach!!

I did a quick search for online petition's. In the end ....because this
message board requires indentification, posting here is like signing
a petition, for or against.

Its so great to have the Tianguis in the jardin on Fridays. It brings a lovely vibrancy to the town center. It provides a place for people of all cultures to mingle and get to know each other. And finally there is nothing like the sisterhood of the used clothing tables

I agree with all the supporters of Friday tianguis, especially Sheelagh. I've been the mirror for many a woman on Friday mornings, and made many friends. I'd hate to lose that camaraderie. Consider me signed in support.

Hola! No one has mentioned that, by moving the tianguis, this will drive people to go to the Melaque market. There they will buy their trinkets and silver and then stop for a coffee or lunch, not in La Manzanilla but in Melaque, and probably visit a Melaque store or two. I recommend Lydia be talked with and Robert at Mariscos and all the owners of the little shops. This will have a spill over affect on them as well.

We left today and signed the petition on the way out. We miss you already!!! (and it's cold here)

If this message board serves as a gateway to a petition to save the Tianguis in La Manzanilla as Daniel suggested, here's my vote. I am out of town now, but feel the Tianguis is an important cultural event that benefits everyone involved. What a shame to have to lose it.

I agree that it would be a good idea to review Mikes post. There is no officiall intention to remove the tiangis from Lamanz, just to relocate it from the Jardine to another spot. the Casino, as an example.

Well, Terry, perhaps that is all it means . . . though I might also suggest it means that people who are invested in this town (emotionally, psychologically, financially) are prepared to keep asking questions until they have as full a comprehension as is possible.

I hope by now every one realizes that it was a decison by La Huerta to keep the jardin open, and not the mayor trying to push them out, I truly hope that no one that signed those petitions faces any backlash, as it is illegal to become involved in the political process as a guest in Mexico

Terry Not sure, but I do not think that involvement in a community affair, such as the relocation of the market, would qualify as the electoral activity that is illegal. Maybe someone who is more informed can provide further information.
