For all you bird watchers out there: Yesterday I saw for the first time in my garden a Painted Bunting. He was one of the most beautiful birds I have ever seen. According to what I have able to find out they winer down here and migrate to the northeast US for the summer. What an honor to see him and hear him sing.

I usually see them when I drive the road out to Punta Serena.
They like hot dusty places and you can see them flying off the road into the bushes.

Those little blue, green, yellow birds on the dusty roads are actually the Orange Breasted Bunting. The Painted bunting has the intense red breast and no yellow.
We have beautiful birds here on the coast, especially this time of year as they migrate north. It's why I love this time of year.

I just found a wonderful web site for bird lovers. http://www.oiseaux.net

Another beautiful bird that has just arrived from the south is the CitreolineTrogon. They have a very distinctive call that can be heard up on the hills in the early morning.

Enjoy!

While on the Cuzalapa Coffee Plantation tour, we saw the elegant trogon as well as the russet headed motmot.
Don't you just love bird names? They rival racehorses!

What a beauty ! I too love watching the birds from my place on the hill . Could you recommend an illustrated bird book for these birds that visit La Manzqnilla ?

Dave Collins has a marvelous book (he didn't write it) though I think its awaiting an update before there will be more copies available. You might check with him.

The best and most complete book I've found is "a Guide to the Birds of Mexico and Northern Central America" by Steve N.G.Howell and Sophie Webb. It's huge. I've gone through it and marked all the birds that do visit La Manzanilla or the area . It's well worth trying to find it on Amazon.

Thanks for the photos and info. We enjoy our bird reference books and have found that putting out very ripe bananas is a major attraction to many birds on our property in Boca. Caciques, jays, buntings, orioles, doves, juncos. At night, the 4 legged ones finish off any leftovers.
