POE: Nogales

Posted by Dean & Judy on April 27, 2014, 3:45 pm

My adventure is lurking right around the corner and am looking for advice from peeps that have made that drive. Please keep in mind that this will not be a "Banzai non stop" run. Leisure is what I am looking at.

Looking at the map it is apparent that maybe staying on the toll road may be the best route coming down through Guadalajara and into Colima.

What is the 200 highway like from LM to PV? Winding road all the way? Plenty of traffic? etc.

Any help will be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance. Again, not necessarily a time factor.

Hasta entonces...Dean & Judy

The road from LM to PV is a good road. There are a few area it is a little windy but long straight stretched also. Usually not much traffic. If you are driving to Nogales, it is a shorter drive than going thru Guad.

I would ditto what Tim has said.
Going through Guad is either via the quota which is heavy traffic or going on the libre from Melaque up through the mountains, the route the bus generally takes, the route which challenges those with a fear of heights, a problem with motion sickness, and/or an enormous respect for LARGE vehicles on narrow roads lacking shoulders -- hair-raising at best.

Sounds like you are headed south

Vallarta to La Manz is good. Tepic to Vallarta is the bad section. You would avoid that section going via Colima

We drive this route every year.

Use the truck bypass border crossing at Nogales, not the downtown one. Road is generally good south to Tepic, but be alert at all times. You can avoid the worst winding mountain section from Tepic to PV By leaving the toll road at the exit for San Blas and then drive down the coast road until you merge with the main highway again at La Varela.

The toll road north of Tepic most of the way to Mazatlan has new surface and is in excellent condition. Heading north from LM a month ago I took that stretch at 85-95 MPH.

To give you an idea of the minimum driving time; we went LM to Mazatlan on Day 1, Mazatlan to Hermasillo on Day 2. We crossed the border going north at Naco, across from Bisbee, AZ on Day 3. There is no wait to cross there and no hassles. However, they have recently cut back hours for the Banamex there from Thursday 4PM until Sunday 4PM only - if you need to get your car deposit back.

You can also get car refund back in Cananea if going the Bisbee route. Much easier than Naco.

Yes Sparky, Dean has been asking for information driving south for the past two months .. or more. Just last week he commented about the Bookstore ...'And boxes of new books will be on the shelves soon, well, almost soon...'
Too many people just look for their turn to post. They are not interested in reading what the OP asks, and answering the question. Makes some look a fool.

Too many brain cells lost in paradise perhaps.

sigh . . . . .
