Fireworks!!!!

A friend just sent me this.

It is a direct quote from the Guadalajara reporter:

"The Guadalajara archdiocese has taken the unprecedented step of instructing its priests to stop the practice of setting off fireworks during ecclesiastical celebrations.

Priests will not be allowed to keep fireworks inside church properties, and will be asked to convince parishioners to refrain from bringing rockets to churches on festive days."

I can't tell you how excited we are to hear this news. The animals of La Manzanilla are happy too!!!!!

Thank you to my Higher Power from me and all the dogs of La Manzanilla. Let us hope the padre is paying attention.

Here is a link, not much of an article and I haven't found another citation.

That is an almost verbatim rehash of the Guadalajara Reporter's story. We are hopeful and dubious, especially about the two places that we live...here in La Manz and on Lake Chapala in San Antonio Tlyacapan. Both padres are ego-maniacs and love loud noises, like their own voices.

Michelle Garrison, who writes "Stuff Mexicans Like," was my last/best Spanish teacher before I moved to La Manz from San Miguel de Allende a year ago. Thanks for reminding/reconnecting me to her insightful blog. (See #19 and #20.) Viva Mexico!

It is going to be very interesting to see how many
priests cities and villages in Jalisco comply. I
know that the cojetes have been around for a very
long time but, they were brought into Mexico from
Spain. There are so many four and two footed beings of all nationalities that will rest and
breathe easier. Please let it be!

I guess they didn't get the memo here. They seem louder after a month without any.

Yes, that was very disheartening after a couple of weeks of quiet.

Unbelievable.

What the fireworks were about

Not sure of what the event was but fireworks usually mean a parade is coming.
It went by this evening. I loved it!

They must have been celebrating the first anniversary of my move to La Manz. ;-)

The Mexican's pets don't like bomb sounds either, and there are far more of them than ex-pat pets. Believable, because it's true.

Here's a different slant on the importance of "la fiesta' and all the trimmings that go with it!

Re: Fireworks & Animal Welfare Victory!!!!

Or, in the "love it or leave it" vein, people with a vested interest in cohetes could move to a different archdiocese...and leave FiFi in Guadalajara? ;-)

BTW, people who care about the welfare of animals should be thrilled to know that the State of Jalisco legislature has not only approved tough animal cruelty penalties but has also ratified changes to its constitution that recognize the concept of "animalicidio," signifying the deliberate killing of a cat or dog. It is the first Mexican state to include comprehensive and specific laws about animal cruelty in its constitution.

Now, what do we do the next time we see someone tossing a tiny kitten into the arroyo or deliberately poisoning a pet?
