Daniel

Daniel,
I was searching the 2010 archives for an old topic. I found one of your posts contemplating seeking a "replacement" moderator for this, your blog site.

Daniel, several times, but not nearly enough, have I joined your Sunset Ceremony on the beach behind your office -- almost daily, but not nearly enough, have I read this blog and sometimes participated.

Many times have I admired the equanimity and thoughtfulness with which you approach your role as Moderator.

Four years after you contemplated recusing yourself as Moderator -- let me add my thanks for your continuation of the role.

Good health and thanks.

Jim Taylor

Yes, we are pretty lucky that he has "hung in" with all of us. Seriously it is a huge job. Personally I would be very upset without the message board to check daily. Thanks from me too Daniel.

I always wonder what he is doing all day long behind the computer (two computers) and feel like interrupting his important work when coming in for a small talk during day time. Since long I learned that he is always researching new stuff and whatever subject matter you may like to discuss, he has some interesting internet links ready to send to you. His administration of this message board shows his huge interest and love for La Manzanilla and us living full or part time in this lovely village. A big thanks Daniel

And he does so much more in the community than most of us know. Love ya for what you do.

Don't forget to offer him a few pesos to cover his costs for this. . . and a blue bottle never hurts.

Who gives you a special place to watch sunsets
Serves up tequila, beer, just when you need a drink
And if you need to swear in general, you can do it there
And who makes a meeting place for all, and keeps the news
Why Daniel that's who!

Hi Jim,

I remember those days, since then I have learned that a lot of it is
about energy, when I have a lot, life is easy, when I don't it shows up
in various ways, that time it surfaced in the moderating the message
board.

Even when I have energy I have certainly made my share of errors. Not
recognizing someone whom I should have known and things like that have
accidentally ended up hurting someones feelings. One person said they
felt like punching me for an accidental offence. I apologized best I could.

It is actually kind of interesting, I totally suck at common courtesy in
real life (I feel like I am manipulating people if I pretend) yet when
I moderate the board (and do emails) I am more courteous. It has been a real
learning experience for me, mostly in communication and I think for others as well.
In that (and many other ways) we go together.

Yes, Daniel, you provide a wonderful service as well as an even keel to conversations that might turn ugly. You are much appreciated!!! We're looking forward to being more than visitors to LaManz in big part because of you and your hospitality and honesty.

A great big 'thank you' from Canada. This message board is checked by me daily. The pictures are awesome, the 'back-and-forth' communication is not only interesting, but, most times educational. We come to La Manz for 2 months during our winter. This message board keeps us connected so when we arrive in La Manz, we are already informed about different activities and events. Thank you.

Yes ! I enjoy this connection to La Manzanilla when I'm up here in Canada. I avoid facebook but I've got a chronic habit with the message board . Thankyou Daniel and yippee about the new camera!

Here, here! Let me add our voices to the chorus of thank you's. Without the message board we wouldn't feel connected to La Manz. nearly as much, when I'm not there, nor would I feel as informed when we are. Sometimes we're just plain entertained when a good, rip roaring debate goes on until it peters out or you judiciously end it when things get hurtful or repetitive.

Your work and you are very much appreciated, Daniel.

We'd like to add our thanks Daniel, for the thoughtful and humourous way in which you share your particular store of knowledge, sometimes vital, sometimes delightfully trivial, always interesting, and for moderating with such a cool head. Your affection and concern for La Manz and its people shines through.

I must join this chorus. I have spent time in LM on three occasions with a view to joining the community. It has proved, so far, infeasible. But I stay connected through this message board and Daniel as my touchstone. I thank you so much, Daniel.

Doris and I second all of the comments above. As 14-year "veterans" of LM, we feel that this column has made it possible for all the various elements of the town to get together in one place, to air differences and to pass along information. Daniel, you are the glue that binds this place together. Without you I don't think La Manzanilla would be the same. Don't ever quit.

You have a huge gathering of fans, Daniel, and this one is waving to you from Victoria BC. . . . can you see me? Down there. Look more closely. Lower left hand corner. No?
Well, I'm there and wishing you another glorious sunset. :o)

Daniel and the message

Posted by Erin Strench on June 9, 2014, 3:25 pm, in reply to "Re: Daniel"

It is certain clear, without Daniel at the helm, the board would be a total gong show, just go to Tomzap and read the open content and the number of people who have been banned from their board for comments and banter. I would suggest for the most part, our board has served the community in a very admirable fashion and that is certainly a credit to the moderator and the frequency he checks and responds to the various postings.

Also, our message board is more of a community newsletter than anything else. I really appreciate knowing while we are away, what is happening to our community.

Thanks and keep up the good work.

PS Daniel's postings are always on point and relevant to community topics.

Reading all the responses is just another example of how much i feel connected to La Manz and stay so over the summer and also to many of you including some only via the board. Thanks, Daniel for your wisdom to dedicate yourself to something so transformative in our often isolating culture!

Smiles! Kushad

La Manz. aka Pueblo Hallas?

Posted by pablo (senor talones) on June 10, 2014, 5:36 am, in reply to "Re: Daniel and the message"

Okay, Daniel, now that your head is swollen to a size only equalled by the subject of Judy B.'s sunset shots (after the requisite tequilas), please get back to work as the MOD and cut off this out of control subject!!! *insert wry smirk*

But before you do, let me also say how much I look forward to visiting this msg. board every couple of days or so. Great job, hombre! Kudos to you and your efforts from another Victorian, who can hardly wait to return again this coming winter. And gracias to all the crazy and amazing contributors here who usually make it a worthwhile read...

You said you are no good at common courtesy - yes, I hear you, D; however,
your UNcommon courtesy, that you show us on the message board, and in quiet
conversations when we get to see the real Daniel - that is what keeps me
a member of your fan club.

I lost my dog
I found some keys
I never thought so and I don't agree.
I'm looking to rent
no that's not allowed
you'll have to look round some other crowd.
Tenacatica
a deplorable state
how will the government decide her fate?
Burglar alert
and she had a knife!
I was lucky to get away with my life.
You're on your high horse
And you're feeling hurt
try to have sympathy and not be so curt.
The chefs post their meals
al la carte and we go
and it's as delicious as you said, so you know.
Someone has died
and we feel so sad
he really was such a fabulous lad.
The pictures we see
they make our hearts sing
we want to go back, like birds on the wing.
Murder and flight
the community stands
no one will talk about that one my man.
And so the day goes
back and forth up and down
And who is there better to care for the town?
No one I'm sure
has the patience to see
except our magnanimous and very big D.

Putting it in perspective

Posted by Daniel Hallas on June 13, 2014, 8:01 am, in reply to "Re: Daniel"

This thread came up at the beach bar last night and I stated that what the
real appreciation was for was the ability to communicate in the
fashion that message boards allow. Here is the real order of things.

#1 - The Internet itself.

#2 - The Boardhost message board software.

#3 - The people who use the message board...you.

#4 - The moderator.

Please allow me to join you in the appreciation of the almost magical way
of communicating a topic between a large number of people. And perhaps a
reminder that this way of communicating is under constant threat by those
who wish to take the power of communication away from the masses.
What can you do to help? This is a good start. https://www.eff.org/

Thank you for you!
