Leaf Cutter Ants

Anyone know what to do about leaf cutter ants? They are denuding several of my plants. I tried a bait suggested by a local friend, but the ants don't seem very interested in it. Tried Terro--definitely did not work. Tried Ortho Home & Garden--again, definitely did not work. Thanks.

I have used boric acid with success. It's not harmful to pets or humans but it's a desiccant for exoskeleton (insects). It's also inexpensive. You can buy it. At Pollo hardware store.

I have used Cruze Negro for several years now and have noted not maney around the house. Just pour a little around the hole and around the entrance. they come out at night so you can follow back to the hole. Also at Pollo's

Go to El Pollo and tell them that you have ormigas que se cortan hojas. They have a separate type of veneno (poison) for leaf cutters. You have to find the ants' hole and just spread these little "nuggets" around the hole. The ants will start hauling the poison down the hole as more good food almost immediately. It is called Patron Ultra Imidacida Agricola Pellets. $52 pesos for a small bag that will wipe out a lot of ant holes. I just cured our next door neighbors of a big ant hole two nights ago with this stuff. The ormigas were hauling a tree into their nest! All gone the next morning. Good luck!

I think those ants are amazing! We love watching them work but more so in the wild. I really hate to harm them but after 14 years of them devastating the gardens and us trying to poison them with many types of poison, we were shown the best way by Hector. Find their holes at night using a flashlight and mark them. Buy some Patron from Pollo then go to the holes in daytime and put a few tablespoons of the Patron pellets in the hole. Next add a cup of water and close the hole using your foot, push surounding dirt to close hole. Job done. The water-poison combo makes a gas that will go down to the nest-cave and wipe them out. We humans are mean and selfish but if you want nice gardens you have to protect your territory.

Some of you are going to hate me, but I use that Patron in my garden to get rid of fist size crabs when I return in Nov. They eat the roots of my plants, killing them. I have tried flooding the holes and then attempting to catch them with tongs when they appear. that worked a total of twice in 15 years catching only two of them. They are fast buggers. I add Patron to masa and put it down the holes. No more crabs. Sorry folks...leaving them alone is more destructive. This product is poisonous and should not be used where pets could have access to it.
