Tropical Depression 8E developed overnight, well to our south and no threat to land. It should strengthen to a Tropical Storm but maybe no stronger. We'll see if it can manage to send some clouds our way, but it might be too far away.

A couple days ago, Tropical Storm Genevieve formed way out west of us and also is no threat to land. But we're already up to the "G" names in the east Pacific!

So I'm thinking.... I would like to be on the panel, or however it works, to name storms and hurricane's etc. I have some really good ones. Who does that job anyway?

Tropical Storm Hernan and how storms get named

TD 8E is now Tropical Storm Hernan. Still no threat to land (except for Soccoro Island several hundred miles west of La Manz.) Predicted to briefly reach Cat 1 hurricane strength by tomorrow. Still heading NW out into the Pacific.

Sherri, here's how tropical cyclones are named, and by whom (since 1977, in the East Pacific anyway, it's the World Meteorological Organization's Regional Association IV Hurricane Committee http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tropical_cyclone_naming

An easier-to-read chart of current and future names: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboutnames.shtml#enp , including a link answering "Can I get a storm named after me?": http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/faq.shtml#name

They use "Bret" every 6 years in the Atlantic, but I didn't have anything to do with that choice!
