A welcome cool-down, and tropical storm outlook

We had a nice set of thunderstorms move through early this afternoon, bringing almost 0.1" of rain and several degrees cooler temperatures. Bravo! I can't really see any trigger for todays storms, but we were overdue for a relief even if it's temporary.

There is still no predicted tropical storm development that could pass close enough by us to give us significant clouds and rains. The last several storms didn't come anywhere near us. They didn't even form until they were already past us and heading out to sea.

The latest one of these is Tropical Storm Iselle which just formed since yesterday and is over a thousand miles to our southwest, just watering the empty ocean halfway to Hawaii. Iselle is the ninth named storm in the East Pacific this season.

From this plot of all the storms so far this year, you can see that the latest ones have formed well to the southwest of the more normal storm track closer to the coast of Mexico:

I can't find any good reason for this behavior in my tropical cyclone forecast and discussion sites. I guess we'll have to wait and see...

Hola, Bret!

I use this as a pretty accurate indicator of daily rain here:

It isn't always right on but usually close. CNA also shows a 60% chance of "lluvia fuerte" for both Jalisco and Colima today and tomorrow. They show a tropical wave offshore that probably has something to do with it. Lots of unsettled weather out in the Pacific right now, as you noted.

We're experiencing what's normal here in Merida during summer afternoons - very noisy thunderstorm, a little wind and a short, hard rain. Clearing up as we speak. Still very hot though. Keep up the great reports!
