INTERCAM notice of new check cashing rules

Posted by david c on August 5, 2014, 1:57 pm

FYI

I just heard from a friend in Mexico that as of August 9th INTERCAM will no longer be able to cash checks. The reason given has to do with the new FACTA laws put in place in the USA.

I am not sure if it includes only US banks or all banks, including those in Canada.

I am not sure if it affects the transfer of funds from a US bank to INTERCAM.

We may have to go back to the good ole cash and carry system across the border.

It is time to make some noise!!

Gracias!

Got the email yesterday from Intercam and, so far, it's U.S. banks that are affected. Canadian banks are good.....so far.

However, as a part of our mission, we always care and try to provide the best alternative for our foreign customers. Therefore, the great new is that early August, we will be offering in branch debiting to your US Credit or Debit card to access cash or for making deposits to a checking account in your name at Intercam. This is a very easy and safe way to bring money down to Mexico, and avoid any risk of card cloning or identity theft. Also, you will still receive the same friendly service from your personal account executive. You always have the alternative to send Intercam a wire to our Bank of New York account and get a much better exchange rate. Talk to your account officer on this regard. We give you easy access to your money in your Intercam Account with our branch tellers or through our debit cards that can be used at all ATMs. Our debit cards can also be used at any commercial establishments that accept Visa cards. Your also have the option to keep the money in USD in an Investment fund account with us, if you should prefer not to have it In a Mexican peso checking account. Since I have an account a Banamex and one at Citi Bank, when Citi would no longer transfer money to Banamex at no charge I went for and alternative. I ended up with XE Currency and Exchange. You can transfer anytime at close to what ever exchange rate is posted online at the time. And it is all done from your computer.

This Intercam notice has me a little on edge - not a bad place to be, maybe )
because just before I left, I could not use my regular ATM card - from
Vancity, Canada - to withdraw money at Banamex. Gregorio, the bank manager,
said that the Canadian banks could not come to an agreement with Banamex
(something like that) The problem had not been resolved when I left at
the end of May... does anyone know if it has been by now?

The exchange rate is what ever is posted on the market at the time you ask for the exchange. my last exchange 13.i92 per U.S. Dollar. Since I try to transfer most of what I will need in Mexico, before I go down in Nov. the 4 days it took to do the transfer was no problem. And that was at no cost. If you need the money sooner I thank there is a small fee, I'm not sure how much. Your best bet is to go to XE.com and check it out. They are a co. out of Canada. Ph# 416-214-5607 or 877-932-6640.

was at Intercam yesterday, was informed no U.S. check deposit or check cashing. There was a rather ghostly looking-(very white) can I say that??, looking woman sitting in the waiting área, she informed us the new rule is because of Walgreens....I thought to myself maybe Hobby Lobby, but Walgreens????
