TS Marie

Tropical Storm Marie developed from an Invest overnight, and now we have 3 tropical Storms at once in the Eastern Pacific (Karina, Lowell and Marie):

Karina and Lowell are no threat to us, but Marie is the first storm to develop in the normal area (south of Oaxaca/Chiapas) since June. It's also following the more normal track (parallel to the Mexican coastline,) instead of heading straight west like the last several storms.

So Marie has a chance of sending us some rains over the next few days as it tracks past us well offshore, and strengthens up to Category 3 possibly. This morning's blobbiness might even be indirectly related to Marie already.

Marie is strengthening as predicted and is now a Category 1 hurricane. The latest prediction says it will get up to Cat 4. It's still staying well offshore, so we should not get any winds and the rain possibility is uncertain.

Heavy surf is a more likely danger from Marie. Excerpt from NHC Public Advisory (http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/text/refresh/MIATCPEP3+shtml/230838.shtml?):
"SURF...SWELLS GENERATED BY MARIE ARE AFFECTING PORTIONS OF THE SOUTH-CENTRAL AND SOUTHWESTERN COAST OF MEXICO AND ARE EXPECTED TO SPREAD NORTHWESTWARD OVER THE WEEKEND AND BEGIN AFFECTING THE SOUTHERN BAJA CALIFORNIA PENINSULA BY SUNDAY. THESE SWELLS ARE LIKELY TO CAUSE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS LIFE-THREATENING SURF AND RIP CURRENT CONDITIONS."

This surf forecast for Boca de Iguanas predicts 4-4.5 meter waves this weekend: http://www.surf-forecast.com/breaks/Bocadelos-Iguanas/forecasts/latest/six_day

How have the waves been at your place, Daniel? Is the beach getting rocky? We've been lucky so far this summer to still have a nice sandy beach this late in the storm season.

Since yesterday Marie has beaten the predicted strengthening and is now a major Category 4 hurricane with winds of 135 MPH. It might get close to Cat 5 in the next day or so before it starts to weaken because of moving into cooler water and drier air. Luckily it is sticking to its predicted track and there are no coastal watches or warnings. The only warning in the NHC Public Advisory is the same one about dangerous surf, for another day or so.

We've received just some light to moderate brief rain showers; nothing damaging: Thursday we got 0.72", Fri was 0.12", Sat was 0.66", and today is 0.28" so far. Storm total: 1.78" / 45mm, so far.

I'm sure there is still a good chance of further rains even though Marie has passed her point of closest approach to La Manz (the center is over 300 miles away now.) Hopefully nothing torrential though.

Some beach photos this AM

We've been having some surf from Marie the last couple days, but nothing like the 4 meters predicted for Boca! The beach in La Manz is degrading but still not very rocky yet.

Looking from the arroyo mouth by the Jardin (the arroyo is not flowing into the bay yet):

Looking at Daniel's beach bar being rinsed by the waves, from Don Raul's restaurant:

Looking down the beach toward the lagoon (which I'm sure is not open either). Some swimmers braving the surf:

Thank you Bret. Am in California and it is good to see your weather news on the 'Board' and really enjoyed the pictures. I could show them to my granddaughter. She really wants to visit now. Much gras again.

I am relieved that Marie behaved herself, Cruz
