2014/15 School Supply Drive

Posted by June on September 24, 2014, 3:01 pm

Hi, it's that time of the year again and once again I'm partnering with La Catalina Foundation to promote the school supply drive. This year Helping Hands Bookstore will also be supporting the drive. You can drop items off at the bookstore and/or you can make a financial contribution which will be used to buy supplies.

Many of the basic items can be found in La Manzanilla and buying locally gives you double bang for your buck!

Paper, pencils, crayons, markers are always welcomed. But, if you have access to things we can't get here like- microscopes, loops, Legos, English books and CDs for ESL instruction, quality sports equipment, we'd love to see some of those items donated as well.

You can find the entire list here

Thanks and email me if you have any questions. june@visitlamanzanilla.com

Hey, what gives?!?!? I did not see where the school is specifically requesting the donation of a wonderful 11 year old gringo kid, perfectly bilingual, fun, enjoyable, high energy, plays piano, fair amount of spending money in his piggy bank, owner of several nerf guns,an array of remote control toys, decent wardrobe, willingness to adapt to local customs and hair styles.

Shoot . . . . . .pens and paper are easy. I was hoping we could unload him this year! Could you reconfirm with the school officials to make sure they have not missed this one particular item?

School has been in session since August, so I wonder why a drive for supplies is beginning now. Are the supplies for La Catalina or the public schools?

I would think it is obvious that this is the time of year all of us intelligent individuals head south for the warmth and wonders of Mexico. Thank you June, for the reminder and for collecting, organizing and distributing the supplies we happily bring with us each year.
Rick - if the school hasn't scooped him up yet, we are desperately looking for grandkids to spoil!

It wasn't obvious to the intelligent individuals who live in La Manzanilla all year, on whose behalf I asked the question. The wonders and warmth of Mexico exist, even when the snowbirds aren't here.

Hi Lynne,

Yes, school is in now but most visitors don't arrive until the fall or winter so we start the drive now and distribute the materials when school is back in session after the Christmas break.

The supplies go to the Kinder, Elementary and Secondary school as well as the La Catalina Foundation.

There have been many years when visitors arrive in Feb or March and bring supplies. Depending on what they are I either store them for the following year or make a second donation to the schools.

Please don't hesitate to contact me directly as well as on the message board if you have other questions...I must not have had my setting correct because I didn't get a message that there additional comments under my original post.

Thanks- June

Actually, my comment about intelligent individuals was in reference to those of us who are leaving the wet and windy, cold and miserable northern climate- and nothing to do with anyone living fulltime in La Manz.

And I am working on that list, Rick...got the cards....

Thanks Joanne. They may scoop him up yet? We're planning on another year of home school so I am thinking about putting together my own "Lyle's Home School Supply Drive" which would include

1. Pool Cue. Could help fund college. Preferably McDermott Pool Cue Model # G1601 with Black urethane forearm/sleeve/handle, i-2 shaft, 6 turquoise/pewter/white urethane points and a turquoise/white urethane "Web" no wrap handle.

2. Deck of Cards. Counting games like Blackjack, 31, Bridge, are all easy covers for the real desire which is to learn slight-of-hand tricks which will come in hand Busking at the Campo in Siena, Italy when he is 19.

3. Astronomy Charts. It will make him even more charming as he lays on the soft sand of La Manzanilla or the Cote D'Azur in France running his fingers through his girlfriend's hair while revealing the true nature of Saturn's rings and the mysteries of the transit of Venus.

4. Shimano Stella ocean going fishing reel with cold forged aluminum spool and Carbon Coated line roller, Septon grip, Low Wear Rate Pinion Gear and Aero Wrap II Oscillation. Strictly for preparation for a career in marine biology. In addition to the reel, a LegendXtreme® Inshore Spinning Rod with super high-modulus SCVI graphite and FRS in lower section for maximum power and strength with reduced weight. We have to make sure he is not jeopardizing his wrists and tendons.

and to tie up all his homework . . . .

5. Cross Ballpoint Pen. Year of the Horse Imperial Model with Red Lacquer finish and 23K Gold Plated appointments and swivel-action propel/repel feature.

I hope my clarity in these descriptions will make it easier to fulfill this important educational drive.

Let me know if there are any questions.

I do not think that you have to be in the intelligent group as June mentioned to figure out why they are waiting til now to ask for donations even thou school started in August.
I have heard the question ask many times by people, why so many raffles/donation drives and fund raisers in the winter! DA! It is because of the winter crowd of course. I wonder how much the people actually asking donate other then their time. The Catalina School has events to collect money so why are they included with the town school, I thought they are a private organization.

The expats who live in La Manzanilla all year around contribute to this community on a daily basis, so there is some resistance on our part to the winter fundraising blitz without knowing exactly where our donations would go and whom they would serve. For example, I'm off to the daily feed of 26 cats and dogs, who would starve to death if they depended on the tourist season for survival.

Understandably there is a confusion about La Catalina Natural Language School, a for profit organization that teaches Spanish to foreigners, and La Catalina Foundation, Asociación Civil (A.C.) a registered Mexican non-profit that supports the Mexican community and depends on fundraisers since it has no income.

La Catalina Natural Language School is located by La Manzanilla art gallery and operates from November – April, teaching Spanish classes to foreigner.

La Catalina Foundation, A.C., is located behind the Kinder. We have a building that has been constructed on land donated by the Ejido and with funds that have been raised from 2004 to present. There is currently a classroom, computer lab, bathrooms and a garden. Many of our programs are now run by paid Mexican teachers and staff, but we also still welcome volunteer help! The Foundation runs free classes at our facility behind the kinder and in the 3 public schools, including some of the following:

English classes in the public schools (grades kinder-9th grade)
Afterschool art and English classes
Summer camp for primary school kids
Wings economic assistance program for youth attending middle school, high school and university which started with 1 student in2007 and currently has 50 youth sponsored by many generous people!!!

The wishlist items will be distributed between the 3 public schools, the Foundation and the Day Care and is always a big help!
